Kerala is all set to revolutionise its labour market by rolling out a project called “Karmachari” to encourage students aged above 18 to take up part time jobs and earn money to meet expenses for their education.
The Kerala government has decided to bring a change in the labour policy on the lines of European and American countries where students work part time along with their studies.
The guidelines being framed as part of the project will focus on identifying the sectors where the students can be employed, the timing of the work, minimum wages and other benefits to protect their rights.
The state labour department has already started to work out the modalities for evolving a framework for the project to promote the concept of ‘Work Along With Study”. A meeting was held in Kochi on Wednesday under the leadership of State Labour Commissioner K Vasuki to discuss several aspects that need to be incorporated for rolling out the project.
“The Karmachari project is being implemented to increase the glory and value of labour and work among the students of the state. At the same time, it also ensures that their rights are protected and they are not exploited,” said a senior officer.
“In Europe and other foreign nations, there is already a policy where students can take up jobs along with their studies. It actually imbibes a confidence in them,” said the officer. By implementing the Karmachari project, the labor department aims to help students earn money for their academic fees and related expenses.
In the first phase, the project will be implemented in Ernakulam district. The meeting held on Wednesday decided to seek opinion from different categories of employers on the areas of work, wages and working hours that can be included in the project. The meeting was attended by Additional Labour Commissioner (Enforcement) K M Sunil, Regional Joint Labour Commissioner P R Shankar and District Labour Officer P G Vinod Kumar.
