When 26 women came together to become part of Haritha Karma Sena in Thirumaradi grama panchayat in Ernakulam, Kerala two years ago, they never thought that their service would become an integral part in maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the panchayat.
These women are now the real heroes of the panchayat as they have collected and removed 4500 tonnes of waste from the houses and commercial establishments in the panchayat in the last two-and-a-half years. As per the panchayat officials, the 26 women are working in Haritha Karma Sena in 13 wards in the panchayat. “They have done the most commendable job in keeping the panchayat clean. These workers are the real heroes of the country. They are the ones who have been in the forefront in waste disposal activities in the panchayat,” said Thirumaradi grama panchayat former president Rema Muraleedhara Kaimal.
The waste collected by each Haritha Karma Sena worker from households and institutions is first brought to Mini Material Collection Facility (Mini MCF) which is set up in all the wards. The waste is then sorted and shifted to Material Collection Facility (MCF) at Vettimood from where it is sent to a private company for processing.
The activities of Haritha Karma Sena started at Thirumaradi in August 2020. They currently collect an average of 800 kg of waste per month. The panchayat provided the necessary assistance, support and facilities. Apart from waste collection, the women workers are actively coordinating with the panchayat to implement Harithamitram Smart Garbage App at all households in the panchayat. While organic waste generated at each household is being scientifically disposed of at the source through bio-bin and bio-gas, the collection and disposal of non-organic waste is managed and monitored through the app.
