Meet 46-year-old Velayudhan K C, a beacon of inspiration for anyone facing adversity. Born without sight, Velayudhan of Karukutty, Ernakulam in Kerala refused to let his disability define his life and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a teacher after eking out a living as a lottery seller for 11 years on the streets.
His journey from a lottery seller to a government school teacher is an inspiring tale of resilience and determination. He has not only pursued education up to post-graduation but is now dedicatedly imparting knowledge to students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Perumbavoor as a social science teacher.
“I was born with no sight in my left eye. Though I had vision in my right eye, I lost it completely when I reached 4th grade. But I wasn’t ready to give up my education because I loved to become a teacher,” Velayudhan told “Open Digest.”
After completing his pre-degree in Arts group, he did his graduation in History and post-graduation in Political Science from Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur. Though he did his B.Ed from NSS Training College in Ottapalam, he didn’t get a teacher job.
As he started facing financial issues, Velayudhan took up the job as a door to door salesman for a home care products company. “I needed money to sustain, so I worked as a salesman. Later, my friends helped me to become a lottery seller. During day time, I used to sell lotteries and in the night, I prepared for PSC higher secondary exam. I am happy that I could achieve my dream after struggling for nearly 11 years,” he said.
Velayudhan is married to Beena P K from Thrissur, who is also partially blind. Velayudhan says that his academic journey was not without hurdles, but each obstacle fuelled his determination to prove that blindness could not hinder his dream of becoming a teacher.
Velayudhan’s life serves as a powerful reminder that limitations are only as restrictive as one allows them to be. In the classroom, he instills in his students the invaluable lesson that the human spirit can triumph over any adversity.
