As opportunities for underprivileged children are often limited, a councillor in Alappuzha has embarked on a mission to bridge the digital divide by providing free skill training in computers to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
P S M Hussain, a ward councillor from Alissery and Alappuzha municipal vice chairman, has initiated a mission called “Vijnana Kiranam” to empower the town’s underprivileged children with free computer skill training.
“Though children in schools are getting access to computers, their skill in using computers is limited. We are aiming to provide a six-month diploma certification programme to the students and equip them with necessary skills to operate basic software on computers,” Hussain said, adding that there is still a stark disparity in access to technology. “There are children who know how to use a smartphone but not the essential digital tools required for a job,” he said.
Hussain is now on a mission to set up a modest computer lab with dedicated volunteers to provide free computer classes to children, ensuring that they acquire essential digital skills. Seeking the support of like-minded individuals in the mission, Hussain feels that basic professional computer skills are a must for students to succeed in the digital age. “It’s not just about learning how to use a computer; it’s about understanding the power of information and technology to transform lives,” he said adding that he is looking for the support of the people who could donate computers in working condition for the project.
Hussain’s project, with the support of Alappuzha Municipality, is a shining example of how local leaders can make a significant difference in the lives of their community. His project will not only inspire his town but also neighbouring communities to prioritise digital literacy and empower the underprivileged youth of today for a brighter tomorrow.
