Accident paralyses him at 8, but Kerala man fights back to build life

Muhammed Rashid M

Muhammed Rashid M of Kozhikode in Kerala is a young man of real grit because he didn’t succumb to despair after a tragic accident left him paralysed and wheelchair-bound at a tender age.

This 28-year-old software developer, working in an IT firm at Smart City, Kochi, has defied the odds to forge a path of resilience and determination.

At the age of eight, Rashid of Kuttikkattoor met with an accident while he and his family were crossing the Kozhikode Bypass road. A truck hit him, and his legs were caught under its tires. “I was so young at the time of the accident that I didn’t realise the gravity of the situation. As I grew up, I found what I had really lost in the accident. But I wasn’t ready to give up. I didn’t let that accident create a narrative for my life,” Rashid told “Open Digest“.

The life-altering event could have easily shattered his dreams and aspirations, but Rashid refused to succumb to despair. Instead, fuelled by an unwavering determination to reclaim his life, he embarked on a journey of rehabilitation and self-discovery.

Despite his physical limitations, Rashid refused to let them hinder his ambitions. He immersed himself in his studies, excelling academically and proving that his disability was no barrier to intellectual achievement. His family stood by him through the hours of crisis and gave him the mental support to come out of the trauma.

He passed out of higher secondary with excellent grades and later did his Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Farook College in Kozhikode and Master’s in Computer Application from CUSAT. “We need support, not sympathy. Physical disability only affects mobility, not the willpower to chase goals. Determination is the key to overcoming every obstacle,” he said.

Rashid, who obtained his driving license when he was 18 years old, drives his own customised car. Rashid says that he has been fortunate to have Risana P K as his life partner. “Risana is by my side, supporting me in my journey. Her unwavering love and care motivate me to keep going forth with perseverance and happiness,” he added.

Rashid stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, a testament to the extraordinary power of the human spirit to overcome even the most daunting challenges. Rashid’s life serves as a powerful reminder that with courage, perseverance, and determination, anything is possible.
