C V Chandrabose, 52, is a small time farmer at Palakottam in Kothamangalam, Kerala and his small venture helps farmers of his locality earn a decent income. He collects the vegetables produced by the local farmers and cuts it into pieces for different dishes before hygienically packing it and selling it as “Ready to Cook ”.
His six-month-old entrepreneurial venture has been so far successful with people coming in from different parts of Kothamangalam town to his “Haritha Eco Shop ” to buy the “Ready to Cook ” cut vegetables. Chandrabose runs the shop near Kothamangalam Krishi Bhavan with the support of the agriculture department. He sells “Ready to Cook ” for famous South Indian dishes like “Aviyal”, “Sambhar” and “Thoran”.
“We are getting good response from people. We also ensure that all the main vegetables are sourced locally from the farmers directly. We started it because people don’t have time these days to cut vegetables for cooking and it’s hard to find fresh vegetables for a dish like aviyal,” said Chandrabose, who also has a small vegetable farm at his house where he cultivates different vegetables.
“I directly source the vegetables from the local farmers who grow vegetables without using pesticides and chemicals. The vegetables are then thoroughly cleaned and washed before hygienically packing it,” he said, adding that he took up small time farming after leaving a job in a jewellery shop where he worked for 27 years. “I am happy and content now,” he added. The eco shop also sells cleaned mushrooms grown locally by the farmers.
