Jayabharathi’s martial art skills for self-defence in film “Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey” seemed to have had its effect on Kerala’s social psyche. Whether inspired by the film or not, the Kerala government has now come out with a unique project to provide Karate training to women and young girls in the state for self-defence and scale up the training project as a livelihood for women.
Titled as “Dheeram Scheme”, the project will be implemented by Sports Kerala Foundation in association with Kudumbashree. The scheme is part of the state government’s 100-day programme, aimed at empowering women.
According to officials, the project focuses on enhancing self-defence capabilities and fitness level of women and young girls in the state. It’s also aimed at providing livelihood opportunities to women by establishing karate training groups on an entrepreneurial model.
“In the first phase of the project, two selected candidates from each district will be given master training in Karate, which includes 200 hours of training and exercises. In the second phase, starting in the third week of April, 420 people will be trained in Karate through these master trainers in each district,” an official statement said.
The project’s third phase involves establishing Karate training groups on an initiative model, involving women trained at the district level, and providing training in schools, colleges, and residents’ associations. Master trainers at the district level will receive an honorarium of Rs 10,000.
“The Dheeram project seeks to create a safe and empowering environment for women, providing them with the necessary skills and tools to protect themselves while creating new livelihood opportunities,” the statement added.
