In a tough move aimed at preventing adulterated coconut oil flooding the market, Kerala government will allow only one brand of coconut oil per manufacturer in the state. The Food Safety Department has come out with this new decision as part of a special drive titled “Operation Oil” to prevent adulteration in coconut oil.
“A manufacturer is allowed to release only one brand of coconut oil. This will be strictly implemented as part of curbing the sale of adulterated coconut oil. As part of the special drive, the sale of coconut oil without brand registration will be stopped and such coconut oil will be seized and legal action will be taken. The oil will also be checked for the presence of sulphur,” said the new government directive.
Food safety officials said a lot of manufacturers are selling multiple brands of coconut oils in order to push adulterated oil for profits. “Large quantity of adulterated coconut oil is coming to the state from Tamil Nadu and sold by manufacturers under different brand names. We are doing our best to check it,” said a senior officer.
The adulterated coconut oil products are sold using a brand name similar to “Kera”, a product of Kerafed, to confuse the buyer. The Food Safety Department a few months ago had banned around 166 coconut oil brands found to be of sub-standard quality and adulterated.
