Kerala is going fully digital for regulating and monitoring waste collection from houses and commercial establishments in the state. After successfully implementing Smart Garbage App in 376 local bodies in the state, the government has now decided to implement it in the remaining local bodies across the state.

Minister M B Rajesh, briefing the media about the Global Expo Conclave on Waste Management Technologies being organised in Kochi from February 4 to February 6, on Tuesday said all vehicles operating for waste collection will be installed with devices to monitor its movement. “

A QR code will be affixed on all houses and commercial establishments in the state as part of the Phase II implementation of the Smart Garbage App service. It will bring in efficiency in garbage collection and user fees,” the Minister said.

The government has also decided to promote entrepreneurship in the waste management vertical considering the fact that the vertical provides a lot of scope for innovation in scientific disposal of waste. Apart from food waste management. The government is exploring the option of promoting startups to come out with business projects to handle construction waste. “Waste management sector offers a lot of opportunities and the government wants startups to come up in this field. Necessary support will be provided to those start ups which present projects to scientific waste disposal,” the Minister added.
