Kerala tourism sector upbeat: 1.33 crore domestic tourists visited the state till Sep

Ernakulam has attracted the maximum number of domestic tourists in the state as Kerala recorded a 196 per cent increase in arrival of domestic tourists between January and September this year compared to the corresponding period last year.

As per the latest data released by the tourism department, 1,33,80,000 domestic tourists visited Kerala from January to September which was a 196 per cent increase over last year. Officials said the various new initiatives of the state government had resulted in the tourism sector bouncing back after Covid – induced slowdown.

The data showed that Ernakulam district ranked first in domestic tourism with 28,93,961 tourist visits followed by Thiruvananthapuram (21,46,969), Idukki (17,85,276), Thrissur (15,07,511) and Wayanad (10,93,175). There has also been a notable increase in footfalls in three upland districts – Idukki (47.55%), Wayanad (34.57%), and Pathanamthitta (47.69%). The maximum flow of domestic tourists was from Tamil Nadu with 11,60,336 tourists followed by Karnataka (7,67,262), Maharashtra (3,82,957), Andhra Pradesh (1,95,594), and Delhi (1,40,471).

Even in the arrival of foreign tourists, Kerala has registered a 600 per cent growth compared to last year. An official release said the tourism department implemented many projects and activities for tourists like Caravan Tourism, Water Street Project, Street Project, ‘En Uru’ heritage village project in the last one year to attract more tourists to the state.
