KOCHI: Covid pandemic might have dried up international tourist flow to Kerala in 2021 but domestic tourist flow recorded a 50 per cent growth in Kerala in 2021.
As per the statistics released by Kerala Tourism Department, foreign tourist arrival to Kerala in 2021 was 60,487 which shows a decrease of 82.25 per cent over the previous year’s figure of 3,40,755. But domestic tourist arrival to Kerala in 2021 was 75,37,617 which is an increase of 51.09 per cent compared to the previous year’s figure 49,88,972.
While foreign exchange earnings in 2021 was only Rs 461.5 crore, a decrease of 83.52 per cent over the previous year, the total revenue (including direct & indirect) from tourism in 2021 was Rs.12,285.91 crore, which is an increase of 8.38 per cent compared to last year’s figure.
Also December recorded the highest footfall of both foreign ( 12245) and domestic tourists ( 1232083) to Kerala while the lean month was May with 169 (foreign tourists ) and 66711 (domestic tourists). Ernakulam was the most preferred district for both foreign and domestic tourists while Palakkad remained the least opted destination. Only 41 foreign tourists visited Palakkad in 2021.
