To ensure safety of children going for excursions in private buses from schools in Kerala, Kerala government has mandated that all such vehicles should undergo detailed inspection monitored by Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) one week prior to the trip.
MVD officials said the department has issued a revised set of guidelines that need to be followed by schools and vehicle owners which are taking children on excursions. “The revised guidelines have been issued giving utmost importance to the safety of the children. School authorities should ensure that they comply with it. Strict action will be taken if they fail to do so,” said a senior MVD officer.
As per the new guidelines, the head of the educational institution must provide the details of the vehicle to the RTO or joint RTO one week prior to the departure of the trip. The vehicle owner or driver must inspect the vehicle before any RTO or joint RTO in the state one week prior to the departure of the excursion.
Copies of the vehicle inspection report prepared in the prescribed format form should be made available to the vehicle owner/driver, the officer who conducted the inspection and the head of the educational institution. The vehicle inspection report should be kept by the driver of the vehicle throughout the journey and produced for inspection if required by the officials concerned. An inspection report is applicable only to that specific excursion. The vehicle should get the inspection report for each excursion.
