A government school in Kochi suburb is grabbing the eyeballs with parents queuing up to enroll their wards. The Government Lower Primary School at Cheranalloor is a perfect example of how a coordinated effort of government officials can transform a school in dilapidated shape into a world-class one.
Five years back, the teachers of the school had to run to each household in the vicinity canvasing the parents to enroll their children at the school. But now, the school has over200 children and smart infrastructure that includes a new building constructed at a cost of Rs one crore sanctioned by the Education Department under the Public Education Rejuvenation Mission.
Officials said it was a collective effort of various departments of the state government to transform the school into a most sought after one in the region. Apart from a new building, additional infrastructure facilities were provided utilizing Rs 35 lakh from the Asset Development Fund of MLA T J Vinod. The Cheranelloor Panchayat also chipped in with funds to buy necessary equipment for school. Various construction works were completed using manpower under the Employment GuaranteeScheme.
“Currently, the school has classes from Standard I to IV. We have set up all necessary digital infrastructure to provide high quality education to the children,” the officials said. The school now has four class rooms, an office room, a teachers’ room, a computer room, auditorium, three toilets, a washing area, and a store room. Four laptops and projectors are also made available for the school with the support of Sarva Shiksha Kerala, KITE Kerala and members of the public.
The school authorities are planning to add an extra division to each class from next academic year. Efforts are also on to transform the school into a model school under the leadership of panchayat president K G Rajesh, school teachers and PTA.
