Reservoirs in the state will be heavily utilised for fish farming in the coming days. Kerala government has decided to implement Kerala Reservoir Fisheries Development Project (KRFDP) at a cost of Rs two crore to boost reservoir fish-farming.
The government has issued an order sanctioning the KRFDP based on a request submitted by the Director of Fisheries. There are 35 reservoir lakes in the state with a total surface of about 30.000 hectares and the project will directly benefit the people living in and around the reservoirs.
According to fisheries officials, the fishermen and tribals residing around the reservoir area will be the direct beneficiaries of the project and they will be organized into Fishermen Co-operative Society. “The fish cultivated under the project will be sold to the public through different sales channels. The project will be completed within nine months,” said a senior officer of the fisheries department.
KRFDP will be specifically focus on conserving and managing reservoir fish varieties with the help of scientific tools. “Latest scientific developments in fish farming will be utilised for augmenting fish productivity. The project will ensure a sustainable livelihood for fishermen by generating additional employment opportunities and income,” the officer said, adding that the project was also aimed at ensuring availability of quality fish to the public.
