At a time when people are frantically looking out for easy money for drugs and booze, two persons in Ernakulam have shown remarkable honesty and integrity by returning a gold anklet to its rightful owner.
Siju P M, 37, and Vineesh, 45, of Thattampaddy in Aluva found the anklet lying on the ground on the premises of a petrol pump in Aluva when they went to fill fuel in their two-wheeler on April 27. The anklet was found lying near the spot where the vehicles are parked to fill air.
It was Siju, an executive in a private finance company, who noticed the anklet lying on the ground. “I immediately alerted Vineesh. We initially thought that it might be an imitation gold ornament. But Vineesh had some doubts. We told the petrol pump staff about the ornament which we found and gave our mobile number to them,” said Siju.
Both Siju and Vineesh also posted about the gold ornament in several WhatsApp groups in the area. Later, the two friends took the chain to Aluva West Police Station, where they handed it over to the authorities.
Based on the message which was circulated in the WhatsApp groups, a woman approached the police station with details to claim it. Police said the woman identified as Jili of Anachalil had lost one of her anklets when she went to fill fuel in her vehicle at the petrol pump. She also produced the other pair of the anklet to prove her claim. Police handed over the anklet to her in the presence of both Siju and Vineesh.
Police officials at the station appreciated the two for their honesty and integrity. The local residents also praised and admired the two for their act of honesty. “They have done the right thing. Normally people hesitate to return when they find lost gold ornaments. They are an inspiration to us all,” a police officer said, adding that their act is a reminder that integrity is not just a virtue but a way of life.
