In a big relief to people who have been worried about shortage of rabies vaccine and injections in the state, Kerala government has decided to stock all government hospitals with adequate numbers of rabies vaccine and anti-rabies injections.
The State Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an order sanctioning purchase of additional number of vaccines and injection without any delay. Officials said the sanction for procurement of additional quantity of vaccines and injections was given based on a request submitted by Managing Director of Kerala Medical Services Corporation seeking permission for procuring additional quantity of 2,65,684 unit of Rabies Vaccine for Human IP and1,42,938 units of Equine Anti Rabies Immunoglobulin Injection over and above the annual indent for the year 2022-23.
“The request was made following the rise in dog and cat bite cases in 2022 and equip the hospitals in the state with adequate medicine if the situation remains the same in 2023,” the officials added.
In the order issued on January 3, the government has approved the additional purchase of the vaccines and injections as a one-time special case. “Given the high demand for rabies vaccine for Human IP and ERIg and the drastically falling stocks, it has been clarified by the MD KMSCL that the additional procurement is absolutely essential. The Government have examined the matter in detail and are pleased to accord permissive sanction for procuring the above additional quantities,” the order said.
