The higher education sector in Kerala is all set for an overhaul with the state government actively considering bringing in drastic changes by introducing four-year graduate courses on new-generation streams.
The Kerala government has decided to bring changes in the curriculum to ensure that students in Kerala opt for universities and institutions in the state for higher education rather than going outside the state and other countries for higher studies.
As per All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019-20, Kerala has the highest percentage of students in the country enrolling for higher education. The survey shows that 38.8 per cent of students in Kerala go for higher education which is more than the national average of 27.1 per cent. Nearly 11.37 lakh students from Kerala are pursuing higher education courses in 16 universities and 1417 colleges.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, replying to the questions raised by members in the assembly recently, said the government would take a decision soon on the reports submitted by the various commissions that were formed to look into reformations in higher education.
“We have given approval for setting up translational research centres in universities and initiate procedures for finalising the Kerala Higher Education Curriculum Framework. After evaluating the performance, the government will also transform universities and a few departments as the Centres of Excellence,” he said.
