Through ICFOSS, Kerala plans big to bring women back to work

Kerala has drawn up a big plan to bring women, who have taken a break from their career due to personal and family obligations, back to work again.

Through International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS), an autonomous organisation set up to popularise Free and Open Source Software for universal use, Kerala government has rolled out training programmes to make women get back to their professional life. As per the officials in the state government, ICFOSS has come out with modules to facilitate the re-entry of women into the workplace by moulding them technically to face challenges in work environment and update them on current technologies in domains in which they have prior experience.

“A large number of women leave their jobs due to personal and family responsibilities. Later, when they decide to restart their professional journey after the break, they become apprehensive seeing the pace at which the world has moved ahead. We offer them guidance and training to update them on the current technologies. We make them industry ready for re-entry, ” said an official with ICFOSS.

According to a government report, nearly 50 per cent of the female workforce in India stops working after three years because of young children, ageing parents or marriage. This roughly accounts to 10 million graduate and post-graduate women. In fact, a good number of women who want to resume work are unable to do so owing to strenuous, inflexible timings and competitive work culture. ICFOSS offers an opportunity to these women to restart their career in various free software domains.

“These types of initiatives are a great welcome as many like me wanted to get back to work. We don’t know where to start as we have totally shut ourselves down for the last couple of years,” said Jyothi Paul, 32, a former IT engineer who took a break from career after marriage.
