Over 28,000 women are the real warriors who work extensively to keep Kerala clean and coordinate with the Kerala government in its major mission to scientifically dispose of about 25 tonnes of waste generated every year.

As per the latest data with Kerala government, 23,546 women in rural areas and 4,678 women in urban areas are part of Haritha Karma Sena that work with Kerala government for scientific disposal of waste generated from households and other establishments in the state. There are 1018 Haritha Karma Sena units functioning across the state and out of it, 926 units are working in rural areas.

“The women members of Haritha Karma Sena play a vital role in achieving the goal of a waste free Kerala. They are a professionally trained team consisting of Kudumbashree women. They work in association with respective LSGs and Suchitwa Mission for collecting, transporting, processing, recycling / disposal and management of waste materials,” said a senior official of Kerala Suchitwa Mission.

The data shows that of the 25 lakh tonnes waste generated every year, 69 per cent is organic waste and 31 per cent is inorganic.

Officials say these women workers, apart from ensuring doorstep collection of non-organic waste, also conduct door to door campaigns giving awareness on waste management to the public, providing guidance on composting systems that can be installed in homes and institutions, and supplying necessary equipment for homes and institutions to dispose of organic waste at source.
