Lukose V J, 71 and his wife Celine Lukose, 67 have chosen to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on a different note. This farming couple of Vellamathadathil House, Elanji, Koothattukulam in Kerala donated 25 cents of their cherished land to landless people in a heartwarming gesture of compassion and generosity.
The selfless act of the couple has not only symbolised their enduring love but also demonstrated their commitment to making a positive impact in the society. Lukose and Celine have been farming on their 14 acres of land for the last many decades. “We have been farming on our land for the last several years. Farming has given us all that we have now. We took a decision to donate a portion of our land to the landless after seeing the plight of people who do not have a place to call their own,” Lukose told “Open Digest”.
The couple had donated land to 18 families earlier on the occasion of the death anniversary of Lukose’s mother. The couple’s children – V L Joseph, who is settled in Australia, and Jiji Joseph, a teacher in a school in Thodupuzha, wholeheartedly supported their parents’ decision.
“We are really happy that our children also strongly supported our decision. We have been blessed with a wonderful life together. We decided to donate the land to share that happiness by helping others to fulfil their dreams of having their own land,” Lukose added.
It was on January 15, 1973 that the couple got married and for all these years, the two have been farming on their land. “We received applications from a lot of landless families. The title deeds of the properties have been prepared and it will be handed over. A few like-minded have come forward to construct houses free-of-cost for the selected families,” Lukose added.
