What started as a tailoring shop by a homemaker in Kerala with just a sewing machine and basic supplies, to earn some extra money and support her family, has now evolved into a garment-making unit, earning Rs 1.5 lakh per month and employing over 17 workers. Yes, 39-year-old Rebecca Elizabeth Kurien of Mekkad in Ernakulam is scripting a new narrative for entrepreneurship by transforming her small tailoring unit on the terrace of her house into a thriving business.
In 2018, when this mother of two, with no formal training in business, decided to chase her dream of starting a venture of her own, she only had determination and commitment as her assets to chase success. After hunting for a job, this M.Com graduate chose to start the tailoring unit.
The initial days were challenging, as Rebecca was clueless about obtaining work orders and how to win the trust of her customers. However, her craftsmanship and attention to detail won her fresh orders from different places. She began stitching pillow covers and gradually expanded to nighties.
As demand grew, Rebecca invested in additional sewing machines and hired a few local women to assist her. Fast forward to today, and Rebecca’s garment-making unit, “Unique Uniforms,” has evolved into a significant enterprise producing a diverse range of garments catering to a broad customer base.
“Now, we are manufacturing different types of bottoms for women, and most of our workers are females who live nearby. We also have three male tailors from Kolkata,” Rebecca told “Open Digest.”
Unique Uniforms now has a subunit at Pathalam, Aluva, and at Kodussery in Angamaly. “My family stood with me in the hours of my crisis, and that gave me the strength. Also, a lot of people came forward to help me. It’s the bulk order from Matha Garments that helped us to grow, and we are indebted to them for supporting us,” Rebecca said.
In fact, Rebecca’s entrepreneurial spirit has not only transformed her life but has also contributed positively to the community, proving that with dedication and perseverance, anyone can turn a small idea into a flourishing reality.

Great dear. Am also on the way of my dream to get success on same way as you done. But am in confused that what to start ? How to start?. Etc. I already do stiching on my own design and production with a brand name. But not getting much popular. Need to get more publicity. Can u plz help. Am also planning to start a unit of stiching. But how to start by ??
