How pearl spot fish helped this homemaker in Kerala earn lakhs

Princy Shaju

Many women would hesitate to take a risk when life is well settled as a homemaker. But 45-year-old Princy Shaju from Thrissur in Kerala didn’t think twice when she launched her pearl spot fish farm and transformed it into a thriving business venture earning lakhs.

Five years ago, Princy Shaju was just an ordinary homemaker, but now she is a successful entrepreneur supplying hatchlings of pearl spot fish to buyers across southern states.

Princy’s journey began with a simple desire to pursue her passion for aquaculture. Armed with her knowledge of fish farming techniques which she learned from a young age while living in Pizhala, a small island in Kochi, she, with the support of her husband Shaju V V, bought 52 cents of land to start a fish hatchery at Annamanada.

“There is a huge demand for pearl spot hatchlings in the market. We sell the hatchlings all year round. We have buyers from states like Goa and Karnataka. The main thing to make the hatchery successful is that we need to fully commit ourselves to it,” said Princy.

Princy underwent training at the Kerala Fisheries Department to master the skill of running a hatchery. From maintaining optimal water conditions to ensuring the health and growth of the fish, she spared no effort in fostering a thriving environment for her aquatic livestock. Her hands-on approach and commitment to quality soon earned her a reputation for producing some of the finest hatchlings. “We take utmost care in maintaining the ponds, and this ensures that our hatchlings are of the highest quality,” she told “Open Digest“.

What began as a modest endeavour has blossomed into a lucrative business venture, earning her accolades and admiration.
