Meet the Kerala woman scientist whose innovative device generates green power

Dr Honey John

Green energy is the future, and a Kerala-based woman scientist is grabbing attention of the world, winning a patent for developing rubber nanocomposites as Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs).

TENGs are devices that can convert any kind of mechanical energy into electrical power through the process of triboelectrification. The TENG harvests electrical energy from wasted mechanical energy in the ambient environment.

Dr Honey John, Professor in the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology and Director of the Inter-University Centre for Nanomaterials and Devices (IUCND) at CUSAT, has garnered international acclaim for her pioneering research and subsequent patent in the realm of green energy.

For the last several years, Dr. Honey John has been relentlessly pursuing to address the pressing challenges of sustainability and energy conservation. The innovative rubber nanocomposites, which she and her team could develop after years of rigorous experimentation and meticulous study, is a breakthrough that not only promises to revolutionise the renewable energy sector but also holds the potential to alleviate the world’s dependence on conventional power sources.

“The rubber nanocomposite has broader applications in the field of sustainable energy generation. We have already started working on models for developing power generation from sea waves using the nanocomposite. Our research team hopes to make major strides in the utilisation of rubber nanocomposite in green energy through the SPARC (Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration) project in collaboration with Flinders University, Australia,” Dr. Honey told “Open Digest“.

According to her, they are planning to focus on hydrogen power using the rubber nanocomposites. “We are working on a viable project for hydrogen power generation from water using the TENGs. Our research has already developed a few working models on small power generation using rubber nanocomposites for devices like watches and micro-monitoring systems,” she added.

With renewable energy emerging as a cornerstone of the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future, Dr. Honey’s research represents a beacon of hope in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Dr. Honey John will work with Prof. Mats Andersson from Flinders University as the principal investigators in the SPARC project.

Why say “woman scientist”? Why not just a scientist or a woman? Would it have been worded as a ” man scientist” in case it was a man?
