Kerala has made another major stride in healthcare by launching the most advanced treatment, ‘Transvenous Route Embolisation”, for Brain AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation), a serious condition and a leading cause of cerebral haemorrhage in young people, at the Government Medical College in Kozhikode.
According to senior officials of the state health department, ‘Transvenous Route Embolisation’ is the most advanced treatment available in the world for treating Brain AVM without complex open-skull surgeries. ‘The Interventional Radiology Department has successfully introduced the Transvenous Route Embolization treatment for the benefit of the people. People should not depend on private hospitals for undergoing treatment for Brain AVM. This is a major relief for the people as the treatment is very expensive in private hospitals,’ said a senior officer.
A brain AVM is a rare vascular disorder in which abnormal connections between the brain’s arteries and veins cause bleeding. Unlike haemorrhages caused by high blood pressure or injury, brain AVM-related bleeding often occurs without any warning signs, making timely diagnosis and treatment more challenging. While uncommon, brain AVM is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt medical attention.
While the primary treatment for brain AVM was traditionally complex open-skull surgeries, known as craniotomy, which had significant risks, the transvenous route embolisation is the most advanced and minimally invasive treatment for brain AVM that eliminates the need for open-skull surgery.
The procedure is performed by accessing a blood vessel in the leg and using a catheter to navigate to the affected area in the brain for effective and targeted treatment, minimising risks.
An official statement said, ‘With the introduction of transvenous route treatment, 95% of brain AVM cases can now be cured through embolisation by completely avoiding the need for open-skull surgery. Kozhikode Medical College has successfully implemented this cutting-edge procedure, offering a high success rate and minimal complications.
