When the going gets tough, only the tough get going. Despite facing numerous hardships throughout his life, 67-year-old Jose K M of Ernakulam in Kerala has persevered with an unyielding spirit and is now a successful small LED serial light making entrepreneur.
Though his early years were filled with adversity, Jose was never ready to give up his determination to stay afloat. After learning LED bulb making at the age of 60, Jose has been successfully running a small LED serial light making unit, JK LED, at Mekkad in Nedumbassery.
Jose, who was a sacristan for about 37 years at a church and also a tabla artist in the church’s choir group, had to do house painting works for years after leaving the church job. But at the age of 59, tragedy struck when he had to undergo emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm. The complex procedure and long recovery caused Jose to lose his jobs. Without steady work, Jose struggled to stay afloat. But he was determined not to let misfortune break his spirit and even depend on his three children – two daughters and a son.
“I learned LED serial bulb making and started small. The idea struck me when my wife Mary Jose and I decided to make LED serial lights to decorate our house. By seeing our work, a few of my friends suggested I make LED lights for them also,” Jose told “Open Digest.“
Soon, the quality of his work and his friendly customer service earned him a name in the locality. Within a few months, orders started coming in, and Jose decided to make LED serial bulb making a full-time activity. “We get more orders during festivals and Christmas,” he said.
As the electronic market is flooded with cheap Chinese materials, Jose decided to provide quality products to his customers. “The Chinese LED serial lighting uses aluminium wires, but we strictly use only copper wires to ensure the quality of our products,” Jose added.
Apart from sales, Jose also rents out LED serial lights to customers. He owns over 600 different types of LED serial lights. After years of hardship, Jose has achieved financial security in his golden years. He hopes his story inspires others facing adversity to keep chasing their dreams.
“If you have the will to succeed, nothing can stop you. It’s never too late to reinvent yourself – age and health issues are just temporary setbacks,” he added.
