To cherish the fond memories of her mother, who died due to Covid, a daughter in Kerala is reviving a small food making business, which was started by her mother about 30 years back to feed the family and support a few local women.
Despite being the wife of a chartered accountant and working as an audit manager, Lakshmi Muralidhara, 31, from Ayyanthole in Thrissur never had to think twice when she decided to revive the business held by her mother Vinaya P G close to her heart.
The sudden death of her mother on May 22, 2021 due to Covid created a huge void in the life of Lakshmi but the small business left behind by her mother gave a new direction to her life.
It was in 1990s that Lakshmi’s mother, Vinaya P G started making pickles, homemade snacks and syrups to sell them to nearby shops and about 40 families living near her home in Mannuthy. For 30 years, Vinaya worked tirelessly to make these products and win the love of the people by offering them high quality products made from fresh ingredients. Her pickles and snacks were a favourite among the local residents.
Following her death, the business came to stand still pushing the women who worked along with her jobless. “This business was her biggest dream and she dedicated her life for it. Even when she was hospitalised due to Covid, she was worried about her work and wanted to return to work as soon as possible. The best way to express my love and honour to my mother is to keep her business alive. I am really happy that I could do it as a daughter for her. Also we could protect the job of the women who worked with my mother,” Lakshmi told “Open Digest“.
After taking over the business, Lakshmi started producing her mother’s authentic and delicious homemade products under the brand name “Lakshmi’s by GSB – Snacks and Syrups.”
“Amma loved to cook and serve food to people. She never used to do it for profit,” said Lakshmi, who multi-tasks looking after the business and her job as an Audit Manager working with her husband Anirudh Varma, a chartered accountant. “It’s not that easy to manage business and work at the same time. But I am happy putting my heart and soul in managing the business which was started by my mother,” she added.
