Standing at just 4 feet tall, Sumesh Sukumaran of Kerala has faced a lifetime of ridicule and prejudice due to his dwarfism. But this 34-year-old native of Vaikom refused to let societal stereotypes dictate his life and is now fiercely chasing his dream of becoming a successful scriptwriter for films.
Without succumbing to jibes and taunts, Sumesh relocated from Vaikom to Kochi chasing his dreams. To stay afloat in the city, he has been selling lottery tickets. Sumesh’s journey is anything but easy. With a bright smile and an unwavering spirit, he sells tickets to passers-by, hoping to realise his passion in the world of cinema.
Sumesh’s passion for story writing began in his schooldays when he used to participate in writing competitions and win prizes. His teachers spotted the talent in him and encouraged him to take up writing.
While many dismissed his aspirations, deeming them unrealistic for someone of his stature, his indomitable spirit gave him the courage to write scripts in his free time, drawing inspiration from his own experiences and the vibrant stories of the people around him. Though he learned a six-month video editing course after plus two, he realized that writing was his true passion and decided to pursue that career path.
“I’ve chosen to sell lottery tickets as it provides me with an income to support myself and it also gives me time for writing and reflective thinking. My thoughts are always crafting stories and characters, nurturing the dream that sustains my very being,” said Sumesh.
Sumesh is set to make his debut with the release of a musical album he penned, later this year. “I know my physical limitations, but I’m working hard to chase my dreams. I know that it is not easy to make it into the film industry, but I will keep trying,” he said. As Sumesh continues to sell lottery tickets and write scripts, he embodies the spirit of resilience and hope, inspiring many to believe in the power of their dreams.
