Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey & other Malayalam films that refuse to normalise issues faced by women

Movies in Malayalam have long-dealt with marriage and its intricate relationships, and showed how married women can become a role model for the generation to come. However, things are a bit different now.  Recently, the Malayalam film industry has produced a handful of films that refuse to normalise issues faced by women in a patriarchal society. They have shown the courage to say out loud “no, it’s not normal”, though it may seem a trivial matter for many. Here are five movies that change society’s perception about women and their role in a family.

Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey

Director Vipin Das’s recent comedy-drama “Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey” is about a married woman coming into her own and holding her ground. The film tells the story of an ambitious middle-class girl, who was married off even before she completes her graduation. Like in Bollywood movie ‘Thappad’, her self-realisation comes after her husband slaps her for making a different dish for breakfast. The movie starring Basin Joseph and Darshana Rajendran is a brilliant film and a must-watch.

Uyare

Uyare, with Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead, tells the poignant story of a girl who dreamed of becoming a pilot. Her story takes a turn when her obsessive boyfriend throws acid on her face. Directed by Manu Ashokan, the movie won accolades for the emotional yet inspiring storyline and stupendous performance.

How old are you?

The movie, touted as Manju Warrier’s comeback film, talks about how a 36-year-old woman realised her destiny after having been sidelined by her own family. In this Roshan Andrews directorial, the protagonist rediscovers her lost charisma and overcomes the odds to attain her dreams.

The Great Indian Kitchen

The Great Indian Kitchen, with its powerful performance and narrative, forced the society to rethink the customs and norms that were considered obligatory, even though they were actually regressive and oppressive for women. The movie starring Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu, narrates the ordeals of middle-class women after marriage. However, she later realises what is best for her and steps out of the confines of marriage to lead a life she desires.

Sara’s

The movie follows the life of Sara, played by Anna Ben, who wants to become a movie director. However, things take a turn after her marriage. The movie narrates the struggles of a woman, who refuses to walk along the path paved by society and family.
