Kerala doctor wins global acclaim as British Journal of Dermatology publishes his integrative treatment for Lymphedema

A Kerala-based doctor has scripted history and gone global after the prestigious British Journal of Dermatology (BJD) in its latest edition published his revolutionary integrative medicine for treatment of Lymphatic Filariasis and Lymphedema.

The BJD, acclaimed to be the leading international dermatology journal, has published the integrative treatment protocol developed by Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) founder-director Dr S R Narahari under the guidance and mentorship of Professor Terence J Ryan, Department of Dermatology, University of Oxford & Oxford Brookes University.

The BJD has published it as an original article titled “Integrative medicine and self-care in the treatment of lymphatic filariasis-associated lymphoedema: an effective strategy!”. It also published an editorial commenting on this paper by Prof Archana Singal, New Delhi, the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Dermatology, IJDVL.

Dr Narahari, a senior allopathic dermatologist, has developed the integrative medicine combining allopathy, yoga and ayurveda through decades of research and clinical work. He also established the not-for-profit IAD at Kasargod in 1999 that has been successfully treating thousands of patients suffering from lymphedema and lymphatic filariasis using the integrative medicine.

“It’s a major recognition to our years of work. BJD is the most reputed dermatology journal in the world and it’s for the first time an integrative medicine combining the traditional medical wisdom of India with modern medicine is being published on the cover page on this journal that shows the importance of this most successful treatment for lymphoedema. I am indebted to my mentor and guide Professor Terence J Ryan,” Dr Narahari said.

The IAD in the last 24 years has successfully treated over 6000 lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema patients from across the world. Currently, the IAD is running a free treatment programme for patients in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in association with Bill and Melina Gates Foundation (BMGF), Ministry of Ayush and respective state governments.

“We are on a mission to improve the quality of life of lakhs of people who have been affected by this debilitating neglected tropical disease. I am proud and happy that our surgery-free integrative treatment could bring smiles to the faces of thousands of patients in the last two decades,” he added.

This article has been published in partnership with Institute of Applied Dermatology.
