A Kerala farmer has shattered conventional notions about farming profitability by earning over Rs one crore in just eight months. He also proudly displays the trading bill from Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) as proof of his earnings from vegetable farming during the period between April 1, 2024 and December 6, 2024.
Hailing from Nenmara in Palakkad, 52-year-old Sivadasan R has been engaged in farming for several years, but it was his strategic approach and dedication that turned his farming on 18 acres of land into a highly profitable venture. By cultivating high-demand vegetables such as snake gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber, and tomato, he managed to tap into Kerala’s thriving market for fresh produce.

What sets him apart is his methodical approach to farming. Instead of relying on traditional techniques, he adopted integrated farming methods, combining organic practices with modern technology to maximise yield and efficiency. He used high-quality seeds, maintained soil health with natural fertilisers, and implemented precision irrigation techniques to ensure optimal growth.
He also leveraged drip irrigation, reducing water wastage while increasing productivity. His farm follows a well-planned cropping cycle, ensuring a steady supply of vegetables throughout the year. “Apart from drip irrigation, I have also erected permanent structures for growing snake gourd and bitter gourd. It’s hard for people to believe that farming can be a successful venture. I have been a farmer for the last 38 years and farming is my only source of income,” Sivadasan told “Open Digest“.
Sivadasan doesn’t hesitate to share the trading bill that reveals the income from his farming when someone raises scepticism about his claim. “When someone raises doubt, I share the trading bill. This success is not mine alone. It is proof that farming can be a sustainable and profitable career if done with proper planning and dedication. The government’s support and timely payments from VFPCK have also been crucial,” he said.
