Stop dumping inorganic waste like used coats and mattresses on road sides and unused plots. Kerala has introduced another pioneering step in sustainable waste management by launching “Eco Banks” in all districts, offering citizens a systematic and scientific option to dispose of inorganic waste.
The Eco Banks function as collection centres for all forms of inorganic and non-biodegradable waste, including e-waste, footwear, bags, thermocol, and even cement sacks and other debris generated during house shifting, weddings, and construction activities.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Clean Kerala Company under the Local Self-Government Department, is part of the broader Nava Kerala mission that emphasizes cleanliness and sustainability. In the first phase, one Eco Bank has been set up in each of the state’s 14 districts, with plans for further expansion based on demand and usage. “By offering competitive rates for recyclable materials and charging only a nominal fee for processing non-recyclables, the centers encourage people to deposit waste responsibly rather than resorting to unsafe disposal practices,” said a senior official of Kerala Suchitwa Mission.
Officials explained that the concept is designed to make waste disposal more accessible, transparent, and sustainable. “Eco Banks provide a one-stop solution for citizens who often struggle with disposing of inorganic materials. It is an important step towards realising a waste-free Nava Kerala,” said a senior official from Clean Kerala Company.
Currently, Clean Kerala Company processes more than 7,000 tons of waste every month, collected from households and institutions across the state. The introduction of Eco Banks adds another layer to this effort, ensuring that waste generated during large-scale events or one-time activities is also managed scientifically.
Environmental experts have lauded the move as it’s a perfect model that can address one of the most pressing challenges—sustainable disposal of non-biodegradable waste.
With Eco Banks now operational in every district, Kerala is once again reinforcing its reputation as a leader in grassroots waste management, setting a benchmark for the rest of the country.
