Kerala has rolled out a major water quality testing project by setting up water quality testing labs in higher secondary schools across the state. The state government has set up the labs as part of the National Hydrology Project.
Officials said the water quality testing labs have been set up in chemistry labs of 28 higher secondary schools in 14 districts. The labs have been equipped to conduct16 tests to determine the quality of the water. The water resources department will provide training to students and teachers for the quality testing.
“The project has been envisaged to ensure the quality of water from drinking water sources by checking it at regular intervals. Necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the poor quality of water is brought to the prescribed quality,” said a senior official. Through the project, the government also aims at raising awareness on the need to prevent water pollution, reduce water-borne diseases and offer low cost water quality checking facilities to the public.
The decision to introduce state-wide school based water quality testing project was taken after the successful implementation of 12 water testing labs at schools in Kozhikode. Public can make use of these labs to test the quality of public, private wells and water bodies.
The Directorate of Higher Secondary Education is coordinating the implementation of the project with the support of Haritha Keralam Mission. These labs will offer the services at a nominal rate which otherwise costs anywhere between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000.
