A heartbreaking tragedy has ignited widespread outrage in Kerala after a 15-year-old student, Mihir Ahammed, died by suicide on January 15 following alleged relentless bullying and ragging at a prestigious private school in Kochi. The boy’s grieving mother, Rajna P M, has stepped forward to demand justice, revealing shocking details of the abuse her son endured at Global Public School, Tripunithura.
Rajna’s harrowing account exposes the horrific treatment Mihir faced. According to her, the teenager was subjected to inhumane punishments, including being forced to lick toilet seats, having his head shoved into a flushing toilet, and being compelled to vape against his will. His classmates allegedly ridiculed him over his skin colour, intensifying his emotional distress. Despite these alarming incidents, the school reportedly failed to intervene.
After Mihir’s death, his friends uncovered disturbing conversations on social media, revealing that some students even celebrated his demise. This revelation has further fuelled the demand for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Mihir’s family has filed formal complaints with Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) and Child Welfare Commission. An FIR has also been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) has been appointed to lead the investigation, which includes reviewing CCTV footage, phone records, and statements from classmates, teachers, and school authorities.
The public’s reaction has been swift and furious, with protests and social media campaigns calling for stringent measures against school bullying. Initially, an Instagram page titled “Justice for Mihir” was created by his classmates to raise awareness, but it was allegedly taken down under pressure from the school administration. Many now accuse the institution of attempting to suppress the truth to protect its reputation.
In an emotional Facebook post, Rajna expressed her anguish and determination: “I am a grieving mother fighting for justice for my son. He was a happy, active, and loving child who deserved a safe space to learn and grow. I urge the public to stand with me in this fight, not just for Mihir, but for every child who dreams of a secure learning environment.”
She fears that delays in securing digital evidence could allow the perpetrators to erase crucial proof, making justice harder to achieve.
Voices from across Kerala continue to demand justice for Mihir. Celebrities, politicians, child rights activists, and the general public are calling for stricter laws to prevent such incidents in schools. The tragedy has sparked an urgent conversation about bullying and the responsibility of educational institutions in ensuring student safety.
