In a significant development bolstering manufacturing capabilities of public sector undertakings in Kerala, Kerala Metals and Minerals Limited (KMML) has secured a major defence deal worth Rs 105 crore for the supply of titanium sponge to Indian Navy.
According to latest details, KMML will supply titanium sponge for the Indian Navy and the deal is one of the biggest defence deals for the KMML in the recent past. KMML could secure the deal after senior officials of KMML conducted several rounds of discussions with Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials. It marks a significant milestone for the KMML which is emerging as one of the top performing PSUs in the country.
“Though KMML has been supplying aerospace grade titanium sponge for the country’s space programmes, this is for the first time that the PSU could find a major buyer for a non-aerospace grade titanium sponge,” said a senior official of the KMML. Industries Minister P Rajeev said the deal has thrown open a big market for KMML in the country’s defence sector. “We are hoping to clinch more such orders in the near future from the country’s defence sector,” he said.
The deal entails the supply of high-quality titanium sponge, a critical material used in various advanced defence applications, including aerospace components and ballistic armour.
Officials said KMML will play a pivotal role in meeting the increasing demands of the country’s armed forces and aerospace sector. Titanium sponge is a rare and valuable raw material known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. These properties make it a sought-after component in manufacturing lightweight yet robust equipment essential for modern military operations. The latest deal is a testament to KMML’s commitment to innovation and technological capabilities to deliver high-quality products.
