In a first for the healthcare sector in Kochi, a 73-year-old woman heart patient has been successfully implanted with a second-generation dual-chamber leadless pacemaker without any surgery at Lakshmi Hospital.
The implantation was carried out by a team of medical professionals led by senior cardiologist Dr Anil Balachandran. Compared to conventional pacemakers, the MICRA leadless pacemaker is a revolutionary device that offers numerous benefits, including a reduced risk of complications, minimal hospital stay, no surgical scars, around 17 years of battery life, and improved patient comfort.
“It’s the first time in Kochi that a patient has been implanted with the most advanced second-generation pacemaker. We are proud of our remarkable achievement in the field of cardiology. This is a significant milestone in the healthcare sector in Kochi,” Lakshmi Hospital Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Anil Balachandran told “Open Digest.”
The procedure was carried out at the most advanced Cath Lab at Lakshmi Hospital, which is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. “Our achievement underscores our dedication to delivering exceptional patient care and advancing the field of cardiology,” the doctor said, adding that unlike earlier models of leadless pacemakers, the MICRA second generation leadless pacemaker can provide pacing in both the atrium and ventricle, offering more comprehensive heart rhythm support. “The patient has to undergo only a minimally invasive procedure as the pacemaker is implanted directly into the heart via a catheter, eliminating the need for leads and a chest pocket. There are no complications, and patients can lead a worry-free life without any restrictions,” the doctor added.
