Lesson from accident gave strength to this Kerala youth to become an entrepreneur

Roopakh K R

A spinal cord injury from an accident at the age of 17 while swimming in a pond totally upended his life and he has been in a wheelchair since then. But Roopakh K R of Thrissur in Kerala wasn’t ready to give up his aspirations to become an entrepreneur. He turned life’s tragic moment into a learning curve to pursue his entrepreneurial journey.

Now at the age of 22, Roopakh is one of the youngest entrepreneurs in Kerala who is successfully running a Neuro developmental rehabilitation and research centre under the brand name “Helius” at Nadathara in Thrissur. He launched Helius eight months back and is now planning to open branches in other districts in the state.

“My accident taught me a lesson. Though our state has developed in the health care sector, I noticed lack of professional rehabilitation centres for patients recovering from accidents mainly after suffering injuries to the spinal cord. My family had to take me to different places for my mental and physical rehabilitation. So I decided to start such a centre in Kerala for the benefit of the patients,” Roopakh told “Open Digest”.

Roopakh, who is pursuing his Bachelors in Psychology, got tremendous support from his father K G Ramesh, mother Deepa M and his elder sister Sreelakshmi K R to launch Helius which now has a total staff strength of 17 that includes three doctors. Roopakh said Helius offers speech therapy, behavioural therapy, physiotherapy and counselling services.
