These students have no prior experience in farming but they have now shown how with hard work and dedication one can successfully harvest Pokkali variety of rice and launch it in the market under a brand name.

A group of students of Hidayathul Islam Higher Secondary School at Edavanakkad in Ernakulam took up farming along with their academics and launched an entrepreneurial venture with the support of the NSS unit of the school.

Twenty-five students of the school started cultivation of the geo-tagged rice variety at Periyali paddy field on June 28, 2022. NSS co-ordinator Razina guided them on farming, which was initiated as part of the ‘Njangalum Krishiyilekku’ project. From preparing the field to sowing, the students were in the forefront. “The students were so excited that they decided to launch a brand for the rice they harvested,” said one of the school officials.  The market launch of the rice was done by NSS District Co-ordinator P K Poulose.

The pokkali variety of rice is known for its saltwater resistance and is grown in the rice field of central Kerala. The single-season paddy is cultivated between June and November. The uniqueness of the rice has brought it the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2008.
