Kerala’s tourism sector is truly brightening up with heavy investments flowing in to the state from country’s top hotel majors. In a latest, Taj Group has launched a five star luxury property “Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa” at Wayanad. The mega project built at a cost of Rs 120 crore is situated in a quaint isle projecting into Banasura Sagar dam at Manjoora in Thariode. The property was built by Banasura Sagar Hotels and Resorts India Pvt Ltd owned by M Mohan Krishnan.
Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) will run the property for a period of 20 years on a profit-sharing basis apart from a management fee. IHCL managing director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal, in a statement, said “While Kerala is known for its scenic beauty and natural resources, Wayanad is a lesser discovered gem. With the opening of Taj Wayanad Resort & Spa, we are delighted to bring alive another aspect of the magic that defines God’s Own Country. We believe that this luxury lakeside resort hotel will put Wayanad on the global tourism map, while further strengthening IHCL’s presence in Kerala.”
This is IHCL second major investment in Kerala in the recent past. A few months back, IHCL signed an agreement for development of a brown field resort project “SeleQtions” in Bekal, Kerala. The resort is a management contract with Gopalan Enterprises. The brownfield project is slated to open in 2024. The 159-room SeleQtions resort is strategically situated on the backwaters and is a short drive from Bekal beach and the historic Bekal Fort.
Apart from IHCL, the Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has also expanded its footprint in Kerala recently by adding two more properties — The Leela Kovalam, a Raviz Hotel and The Leela Ashtamudi, a Raviz Hotel in Kerala, to its resort portfolio. The Leela Kovalam, a Raviz Hotel returns to The Leela portfolio after three years while The Leela Ashtamudi, a Raviz Hotel is a new addition to the brand portfolio.
