From kitchen to the world of entrepreneurship. Over 30 women of Amballoor grama panchayat in Ernakulam have started their own ventures in electrical and plumbing works after undergoing training in LED bulb making, Christmas star making and plumbing.
The grama panchayat is aiming to make a woman in each household self-reliant and an earning member through a woman empowerment programme being organised with the support of Institute of Human Resource Development (IHRD) and Kerala Academy for Skill Excellence. “We want every woman to learn a skill so that they can be self-employed and self-reliant. The training programme has been devised in such a manner that any woman with a determination can learn the simple skills of LED bulb making. We are also providing necessary support to each woman who successfully completes the training programme,” said Amballoor grama panchayat president Biju Thomas.
Though the panchayat has started the training programme for selected 30 women in the first phase, it will cover more women in the coming months. “We will support the women to find market for selling the products they make. A group of six trained women have already set up a stall to sell LED stars,” the president said.
IHRD officials said the women who undergo training in plumbing will be able to find plumbing works in their neighbourhood. “There is always a demand for skilled workers. These women could easily find work and earn money. The IHRD is also providing on-field training to those women who opt to learn plumbing,” the officials added.
