A 100-year-old man in Kerala is showing how farming can help you lead a healthy life. Narayanan Nair of Uzhavoor in Kottayam, Kerala, is proving that age is just a number by remaining actively engaged in agriculture. He still spends at least five to six hours in his field planting trees, watering, and taking care of the crops he has planted.

Nair’s agricultural journey spans over nine decades, beginning in the fifth grade when he assisted his father in the paddy fields of Ramapuram. After relocating to Uzhavoor, he transformed his land in Idakkoli into a thriving ecosystem, cultivating rubber, turmeric, diverse yams, bananas, and vegetables, while keeping livestock and poultry.

Though he suffered a leg fracture a few years back, he overcame it and uses a walker to navigate the field and attend to daily chores, mainly watering the crops and applying manure.

Remarkably, Nair has kept himself entirely immune to lifestyle diseases. He takes zero medications and even overcame a past heart issue through sheer active living. He continues to single-handedly prepare the soil, sow seeds, and meticulously tend to his crops.

Currently living with his late son’s wife and grandchildren, the resilient farmer was recently honoured by the Uzhavoor Panchayat on Farmers’ Day, a fitting tribute to a lifetime dedicated to farming.
