Kochi will soon have its plant to convert bio-degradable waste into bio-CNG with Kerala government deciding to provide necessary land, water and electricity to Bharath Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for setting up the plant.
The works on the plant for producing bio-CNG is expected to begin by this year end with Kerala government expediting the procedures to provide the required infrastructure to the BPCL.
As per the latest details, a recent cabinet meeting has taken a decision in this regard and has requested the BPCL to submit a detailed proposal for setting up the bio-CNG plant before October 1, 2023. The state government will also provide necessary land for the BPCL to lay pipelines for the project.
Industries Minister P Rajeev said the cabinet decision was a step towards the state government’s commitment to prevent a repeat of the fire mishap at Brahmapuram that choked the city. “The BPCL has earlier conveyed to the state government that they could set up a bio-CNG plant within a year in Kochi. BPCL has agreed to take the responsibility of implementing the project and utilise the gas generated from the plant,” Rajeev wrote in a FB post.
The government has also decided to come out with a comprehensive plan to scientifically dispose of the waste generated in Kochi city. To streamline the waste management activities, several measures have been put in place for proper waste collection in coordination with the local bodies and residence associations. “The bio-CNG plant will play a crucial role in finding a permanent solution to Kochi’s garbage problem,” Rajeev added.
The bio-CNG plant will be on the lines of the plant that is set up by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to convert the garbage generated by the city into biofuel.
