A home that keeps you cool even during peak summer and costs just Rs 14 lakh. Yes, a young civil engineer from Kannur in Kerala has constructed a 950 sq ft two-bedroom eco-friendly traditional Kerala house on a five-cent plot for him and his family that doesn’t need an air-conditioner to stay cool and fits right into the budget.
“It was my dream to own a home. My love for traditional Kerala-style architecture made me explore different ways to construct an eco-friendly house suiting my budget,” said 29-year-old Saneesh V K of Peringathur, Thalassery, Kannur.
Saneesh, who passed out of Government Polytechnic College in Kannur after completing his three-year diploma in civil engineering in 2012, decided to construct the traditional eco-friendly house using locally sourced materials to show the world that indigenous resources can be utilised to create environmentally conscious living spaces at a low budget.
It took a year for Saneesh to finish the construction of the house that stands as a testament to both tradition and modernity, seamlessly blending ancient building techniques with contemporary design principles.
“I have used laterite stones, terracotta tiles, and specially selected wood known for its ability to stay cool even during the peak of summer. These materials, readily available in the region, not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the house but also enhance its thermal efficiency, keeping it naturally cool in the scorching heat,” Saneesh told “Open Digest“.
“We often overlook the wealth of resources available in our own backyard. By embracing traditional techniques and utilising locally sourced materials, we can create sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and the community,” he added.
Despite its unique features and sustainable construction methods, the house cost a mere Rs 14 lakh to build. “I didn’t use any expensive materials like ceramic tiles, granite, or marble. The environment-friendly house is highly cost-effective. I am really happy that I could construct this comfy house for my family,” he added.
