KOCHI: A software firm from a tier-III town in Kerala is taking on Chinese IT giant Zoom after it successfully developed a video conferencing software called “V-consol”. Techgentsia, functioning out of Infopark in Pallipuram, Cherthala, grabbed the attention when it came first in the Innovation Challenge announced by the Union Ministry of Electronics and IT during the lockdown.
The company led by Keralite Joy Sebastian received Rs once crore and a three-year contract to set up video conferencing facilities in central government institutions as the prize for winning the competition. The video conferencing facilities will be set up using V-consol software through National Informatics Center (NIC), an official statement said, adding that the company will also receive an annual maintenance grant of Rs 10 lakh.
Joy Sebastian, a native of Poonkavu, Alappuzha, is the managing director and chief executive officer of Techgentsia, which developed V-consol as an alternative to Zoom and Google Meet. V-Consol will replace Zoom and Google Meet in government offices and it supports eight Indian vernacular languages, including Malayalam. The company pitched V-consol before the Union Government after the IT Ministry announced a competition to develop a video conferencing solution on April 12, 2020 under Digital India Initiative.
V-consol was picked as the winner from a three-stage competition which was open for industries, start-ups and individual experts. There were 1,983 submissions from across the country and the winner was selected by a jury of senior government officers, academicians and members from the IT industry.
