6 new-age Malayalam actors who blurred regional boundaries with sheer talent

Malayalam cinema is always ahead of its times. It is content-driven, dynamic, independent and is bold enough to experiment new subjects. Today, the industry has churned out a talented pool of young, new-wave filmmakers and actors. For them, the cultural and language barriers that existed in Indian cinema, have simply vanished, especially with the advent of OTT platforms.
M-Town celebs acting in other language movies is not something new. They have always made their mark, especially in Tamil and Telugu films. But today’s talented and hard-working young men and women from Mollywood are making it look much easier.

Here’s a list of Malayalam actors who made the language barriers obsolete.

Prithviraj Sukumaran

A multi-faceted artiste, Prithviraj Sukumaran has starred in more than 100 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages since his debut in 2002. His notable films in other regional languages include Kana Kandaen, Parijatham, Mozhi, Satham Podathey, Kannamoochi Yenada, Raavanan, Kaaviya Thalaivan, Aiyyaa, Aurangzeb, and Naam Shabana.

​Nithya Menen

Nithya Menen has won hearts through her performance in Malayalam films. But she also made her mark in regional film industries and Bollywood. Her first Bollywood movie was ‘Mission Mangal’. The actress is also popular for her Hindi web series, ‘Breathe: Into the Shadows’. She has many films in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada to her credit, the latest being Thiruchitrambalam.

Dulquer Salmaan

DQ, without doubt, has a huge fan base across India. He has exhibited his talent in many industries including Bollywood. He made his B-Town debut with Karwaan. The Zoya Factor was yet another Bollywood venture. His Telugu-debut Mahanati, a biopic on actress Savitri, opened to positive reviews from critics and also enjoyed commercial success at the box office. O Kadhal Kanmani, Sita Ramam, and Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal are some of his blockbuster ventures outside Mollywood.

​Parvathy Thiruvothu

The national award-winning actor has several hits to her credit. She made her Bollywood debut opposite Irrfan Khan in Qarib Qarib Singlle in 2017. Her notable works in Tamil include Poo and Maryan. She has also acted in Kannada films.

Fahadh Faasil

One of the finest actors of Mollywood, Fahadh Faasil made waves with his role in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, in which he played the antagonist. Fahadh made his debut in Tamil cinema, through the film Velaikkaran starring Sivakarthikeyan, opposite whom he plays the antagonist. His role in Tamil movie ‘Super Deluxe’ was well appreciated. In 2022, he was seen along with Kamal Haasan in the film Vikram.

​Roshan Mathew

The charming young actor Roshan Mathew started his acting career in theatre. Roshan Mathew marked B-Town debut with Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Choked’. He also bagged a role in the film ‘Darlings’ which also featured Alia Bhatt. He made his Tamil debut with Cobra, starring Chiyaan Vikram.
