Walls along the road in Kumbalam, a picturesque village located in the suburbs of Kochi city, is becoming a huge canvas for artists. As part of making the village a major tourist attraction, the residents along with artists are painting different themes on the street walls.
The Kumbalam village is a cluster of tiny islands – Kumbalam, Panangad (including Madavana and Udayathumvathal), Cheppanam and Chathamma – and is surrounded by the Vembanad Lake. Though these tiny islands offer huge tourism potential, they remain largely unexplored.
The people of this backwater paradise, with the help of artists, are creating intriguing wall paintings along 5 km stretch on the National Highway between Madavana and Panangad.
The paintings depict the history of the region and also showcase socially relevant messages including women’s safety, drug abuse prevention and environment protection. The work on the street art began on October 2, 2022 and is now in the final stages.
As part of the tourism promotion, a boat race was organised by Kumbalam Grama Panchayat, Rotary Club of South Kochi, and Thanal Foundation on Sunday. Ahead of the boat race, 12 km area of lake was cleaned at Panangad, Cheppanam and Chathamma.
