Kerala’s capital city Thiruvananthapuram will soon have an integrated public transport system as Kochi Metro Rail Corporation (KMRL) is preparing a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the city for the next 30 years.
KMRL will evaluate various aspects such as population growth, vehicle growth and space availability for preparing the CMP.
Urban Mass Transit Company Limited, under the guidance of KMRL, is conducting preliminary study for the project. KMRL representatives discussed the project details in a meeting held recently in Thiruvananthapuram. As per an official release, the areas which will come under the CMP include Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Neyyattinkara Municipality, Mangalapuram, Andoorkonam, Vilappil, Vilavoorkal, Pallichal, Kalliyoor, Venganoor, and Balaramapuram panchayats.
Apart from this, the following areas have been identified as areas of influence of the project. Attingal and Nedumangad Municipal Corporations, Chirayinkeezhu, Azhoor, Mudakkal, Pothencode, Malayinkeezhu, Vembayam, Karakulam, Aruvikkara, kattakkada, Kadinamkulam, and Maranalloor panchayats.
In the first phase, a study will be conducted on the population as well as the road and rail facilities in the city. The plan will take into consideration the development activities that may take place in the next 30 years. The study will be completed before March 31. 2023. The project aims to upgrade the city’s transportation facilities, improve public transportation and build better parking facilities.
