With RRR shining at Golden Globe, Keralite art director Sabu Cyril has much to cheer about

National award-winning production designer Sabu Cyril had received much praise for his work in RRR (Rise Roar Revolt). With the movie’s viral song ‘Naatu Naatu’ making history at the Golden Globe Awards, India’s celebrated art director-turned-production designer has much to cheer about.

The beautiful song and dance sequence was shot right against Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s residence – Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv. With the palace in the backdrop, Sabu Cyril was able to take us to the colonial era with much ease while the electrifying music by M M Keeravani complemented the beautiful visuals.  

Sabu Cyril, who was born in Kozhikode, Kerala, had lent his expertise for several Malayalam films. He has worked with Rajamouli for the Baahubali films. In Malayalam, he had created the sets for numerous blockbusters like Thenmavin Kombath (1994), Kaalapani (1996) and Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021). Apart from RRR and Baahubali, his notable works in other languages include Enthiran (2010), Hey Ram (2000), Guru (2007), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Krrish 3 (2013).

RRR won the Best Original Song for ‘Naatu Naatu’ at the 80th Golden Globe Awards held in Los Angeles on January 11. Music director MM Keeravani received the award. ‘Naatu Naatu’ competed against – ‘Carolina’ (Taylor Swift) from Where the Crawdads Sing, ‘Ciao Papa’ (Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, and Guillermo del Toro) – Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,  ‘Hold My Hand’ (Lady Gaga, BloodPop, and Benjamin Rice) – Top Gun: Maverick and ‘Lift Me Up’ (Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson) – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

‘RRR’ was directed by S S Rajamouli and produced by DVV Danayya. The lyrics of the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ are penned by Chandrabose. Music video of the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ is choreographed by Prem Rakshith and stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan. The song ‘Naatu Naatu’ is mixed and mastered by G Jeevan Babu and recorded at JB Studios.
