With a steadfast commitment to combating climate change and fostering sustainable energy solutions, Kerala has unveiled an ambitious project to conduct research on Green Hydrogen as an alternative energy source.
As per the latest details available from the state government, ANERT has been entrusted with the task to establish pilot projects in green hydrogen production, compression, storage and refuelling facilities for hydrogen vehicles. As per official sources, the state aims to position itself at the forefront of the nation’s transition towards a cleaner and more efficient energy landscape. “The government has approved a proposal submitted by ANERT in this regard and an amount has been sanctioned,” the officials said.
The pilot projects would be taken up in collaboration with IIT Madras for green hydrogen production from peat gas, brine, etc. “The research will focus on green hydrogen production from water hyacinth, rubber waste and other agricultural/forest biomass. It will also look at using green hydrogen for long distance vehicles and water transport,” the officials said.
The government order dated November 28, 2023 has also approved setting up of a Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen by ANERT in collaboration with other reputed institutes such as IITs and CSIR labs.
The state’s plan encompasses significant investments in research and development, creating a conducive environment for scientists, engineers, and innovators to explore cutting-edge technologies. Collaborations with leading research institutions, private enterprises, and international partners are also on the agenda to leverage collective expertise and resources.
