Kerala: 66 years of being the best on many fronts

Since its formation on November 1, 1956, Kerala has come a long way in performing better than other states on many fronts. On the occasion of celebration of 67th Kerala state formation day, Open Digest lines out a few distinctions of the state which we are all proud of. We also salute the innumerable persons who had put in their great effort over the years to make Kerala stand as the best performing state in the country on many verticals.  

Kerala has highest literacy rate  – 96.2 % 

Kerala continues to hold the distinction of having the highest literacy rate of 96.2percent while India’s overall literacy rate is an estimated 77.7 per cent.  As per the report of National StatisticalOffice (NSO),  Delhi is second to Kerala with an overall literacy rate of 88.7 per cent. After Kerala and Delhi,Uttarakhand comes in as the third most-literate state at 87.6 per cent, followed by Himachal Pradesh at 86.6 per cent and Assam at 85.9 per cent.  

Kerala tops Niti Aayog’s health index 

Kerala has been the best state in terms of overall health performance among other states in the country. According to the fourth Health Index released by NitiAayog, Kerala emerged as the best performer for the fourth consecutive time.  

Kerala number one in sustainable development 

Kerala has repeatedly been top ranked in Niti Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)India Index 2020-21. As per the report, it’s for the third consecutive year,Kerala has been chosen for its social, economic and environmental progress.Kerala bagged 75 points, an improvement from 70 and 69 in the previous years.Since its launch in December 2018, Kerala has been topping the index, which has become the primary tool for monitoring progress on the SDGs in the country. 

Kerala best governed state in the country

Kerala was the best governed state in the large states category in the Public Affairs Index-2020 released by Public Affairs Centre in 2020. Asper the report, the states were ranked on governance performance based on a composite index in the context of sustainable development. Four southern States— Kerala (1.388 PAI Index point), Tamil Nadu (0.912), Andhra Pradesh (0.531)and Karnataka (0.468) stood in the first four ranks in the large State category in terms of governance.

Kerala top performer in the States’ Startup Ranking 

Kerala was selected as the top performer for the third consecutive time in the States’Startup Ranking. Kerala was selected for developing a robust start-up eco system on the strength of several initiatives such as the setting up of Digital Hub.Kerala had come top in the rankings instituted by Startup India underDepartment for Promotion of Industry and Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. 

Kerala has the lowest Infant Mortality Rate  

Kerala has the lowest infant mortality rate (IMR). It was brought down from 10 to the single digit of 7 (per 1,000 live births), as per the  Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin.Kerala has achieved the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target for IMR reduction, set at eight for the year 2020. While the State’s IMR for rural areas is nine, it’s five for urban areas. 

Kerala has best life expectancy rate of 75.2 years 

As per the sample registration survey (SRS)-based Abridged Life Tables (2015-19) released by the RegistrarGeneral and Census Commissioner, Delhi and Kerala topped the list with a life expectancy of 75.9 years and 75.2 years, respectively.
