Covid-induced crisis didn’t have any effect on demand for coir products from Kerala and other coir making states as coir exports during 2021-22 registered an all-time record of 1234855 Metric Tonnes valued at Rs 4340.05 crore which is 6.2 per cent high compared to the exports of 1163213 Metric Tonnes in 2020-21.
As per the latest stats with Coir Board, the export of coir has registered a growth of 14.8 per cent in value during 2021-22. Currently, India has 69 coir units registered as coir exporter.
While exports of coir pith, tufted mats, coir fibre, handloom mats, coir yarn, power-loom mats, rugs & carpet, coir rope and other coir products registered a growth, products like handloom matting, power-loom matting, coir geo-textiles and rubberised coir showed a decline in exports.
Coir pith with export earnings of Rs 2259.18 crore constituted 52.05 per cent of the total coir export followed by tufted mats with export earnings of Rs 1001.15 crore.
Tuticorin Port exported highest volume of coir
Tuticorin port has exported highest volume of 46 per cent of the total coir exports followed by Cochin and Chennai Ports.
US is the top importer of coir
United States was the top importer of coir with 29.79 per cent in value and 17 per cent in quantity followed by China with a share of 20 per cent in value and 38 per cent in quantity. The other main countries that imported coir from India are Netherlands, South Korea, United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, Italy. Germany and Canada.
